Khxos popped online earlier this week with a teaser for a new song accompanied by a RhymezLikeDimez animation and the caption: “250 retweets an mi put this out.” Less than 24 hours and over 500 retweets later, the dancehall fusion artiste delivered on his word and unleashed a heart-filled banger into the universe.
“I was going through a rollercoaster of emotions and decided that I wanted to put it all in the music,” Khxos shares candidly. “I wanted to create something relatable and fun. Something with true emotions behind it, lyrics that connect and a vibe that makes people want to bop when listening.”
The result is “New Celiné”, an instant classic produced by DillyGotItBumpin, and mixed by Chargii that fuses dancehall, trap and R&B. It’s an impromptu and much-needed indie release during tense and uncertain times that are also brimming with opportunities for self-awareness and creativity. The same can be said for Khxos. The lyrics (available on Genius) are filled with catchy one-liners, clever punchlines (“Nah guh give you Busy Signal, mi nuh ‘stay so.’”) and confessional anecdotes.
Tory Burch when yuh slide
How yuh wah fi leave me when yuh know yuh a mi slime
How yuh wah fi leave mi when yuh know yuh a mi life?
Celine Dion mi call yuh cause yuh mek mi feel alive!
Khxos describes the lyrics as coming from a place of “fun flow, feelings and good energy.” He goes on to add “The current sound and lifestyle of our generation is what inspired it all really. We all have a certain lifestyle that we would want to live no matter how humble we think we are. We all want the people around us to be happy and comfortable. We all want to be seen with the finest things and take vacations/baecations without worry. We all need a break from reality sometimes, right?”
Khxos also delivered a surprise single on Valentine’s Day called “No Disturb Sign”, a sensually explicit love letter produced by Sean Alaric (“Jungle”, “Throne”) and released on YouTube, SoundCloud and Audiomack by Delicious Vinyl Island. Consistency and quality music seem to be his signature, as proven by his independent Melanin EP and “Tambrin” the breakout hit produced by Trackstarr (“Stress Free”, “Walking Trophy”) with over 789,000 views on YouTube to date.
This is just a taste of what Khxos has in store for an equally chaotic 2020. Despite the nature of both his name and the times, he remains focused and collected. “I’m working… working on myself as a person, working on finding a place where I’d want my music to be (in the hearts of many), working on taking my career to a whole different level,” he reveals. “I want to open doors for the people around me. Like I’ve said, we all have our individual dreams. Great things are coming.”
