Meet Junior ‘King Challice’ Pennicooke. Born from humble beginnings in the small community of Jamaica Creek Street in Montego Bay, Challice got his first exposure to music from a very young age by being in the company of his elders. There, he was introduced to ‘foundation’ music from artistes like Burning Spear, Culture, Akae Beka and more. It was the messages in their music that Challice attributes to helping him become the man he is today.
Like the smoking pipe, King Challice wants to ‘purify’ listeners with his tunes. Though he wouldn’t call himself a strict ‘Reggae’ artiste, his music rooted in social commentary and socio-politics. He is a self-proclaimed rebel with a cause and his debut EP, ‘Red’ captures these themes. The four-track project was self-produced and speaks to awareness, the pursuit of knowledge, building up the future generation and upliftment. The EP-titled track, ‘Red’ sums up the project : “There are so many things that can be better for the world, instead they waste time fighting with copper and lead and so many youths are out there in the world to be fed”. Another track on the EP, ‘Maica’ was created after his return to Jamaica after being away for 18 years; the state of the country, “A lot of foreign-owned businesses with no benefits to Jamaican citizens. Senseless music inspiring youths to live impractical lifestyles. Jamaica is paradise but they can’t see it because there captivated by what they see abroad.”
King Challice’s work includes a collaborative track ‘Fall In Love’ with Tampa artiste Awun. He also has plans to release a single, ‘Well Blessed’ within a year.
